The first impression given by Japan is one of chaos. But, mark you, a chaos which is far from vexatious or unpleasant. A chaos which is vigorous, aggressive, cocksure, strong and powerful.

Tokyo is an endless maze of unlikely I streets, unfathomable tangles of electrical wiring and stunning buildings, almost all of which are extremely new. Within its measured rectangular grid Osaka can barely contain an overflowing musee imaginaire which seems to include all the world’s recent architecture.

Large parts of other Japanese cities, including venerable Kyoto, also give the impression of being on the point of spilling over. The landscape is littered with objects which are often unbelievable, and in any event out of context.
