FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT’S Imperial Hotel building first began as a design on his boards in 1915. Construction was started in 1917 and the hotel opened in 1922.

In 1923 it survived almost intact a major earthquake which ruined much of Tokyo, a feat that was to become its most famous statistic. As a hotel, the building functioned for 45 years; on November 15, 1967 the doors were closed and despite a last minute effort to save it, demolition began shortly thereafter.

This blunt chronology conceals both the glory of the building’s existence and the tragedy of its end. Both of these—the reality of the hotel as art and the nearinevitability of its demise—are aspects of a single whole.
