When Frank Lloyd Wright’s Former Imperial Hotel was demolished in 1967, a team of researchers spent 6 months for researching and preserving records of the building. The team – Professor Shindo Akashi and his students at Waseda University – published the result as a book called “Empirical Research on Former Imperial Hotel” in 1972.
The contents included a set of plans redrawn from detailed on-site surveys, Professor Akashi’s research papers, and an extensive photographic record by a photographer Osamu Murai. Due to its small circulation and high price, the book is now very difficult to obtain. This time, finally, the 1972 book has been re-edited as the new popular edition for wider reach.
Because Wright had made numerous modifications to his original drawings during the construction, those included in this book are the only materials that show what had actually been built. The valuable hand-drawn records have been kept at the Special Reference Room of Waseda University Library in Tokyo.
