Stepping down from the roof, visitors are greeted by this magnificent scene. This is the work of Ando. There is nothing but a concrete box with a cut out scene of the natural surroundings and a cross on the water at the center. This is by no means formal, yet it instills a somewhat warm, peaceful, and refreshing atmosphere.

It is clear that Ando considered holy spaces to be related to nature. This design is the result of a dialogue with nature: the green, the water, the light, and the wind. It is utterly impossible to come up with such a design without the daily consideration of the relationship between nature and architecture.

The design method can be compared to the traditional “borrowed scenery” technique. Unlike the western style of designing, which tries to overcome nature, the Japanese approach is to make the most of the relation with nature.
