In January 2007, Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), formally announced a project to develop Saadiyat, an offshore island. The aim of the project is to create a “culture island” where visitors can enjoy both the natural environment and culture; the cultural district which is to be the core of the project will be composed of five cultural facilities such as museums and theaters. The participating architects are Frank 0. Gehry, Jean Nouvel, Zaha Hadid and myself.
I am in charge of a maritime museum, which will introduce the close relationship of everyday life and culture in this country of deserts to the sea. Because of the nature of the project, there was hope that the new building would have a certain symbolism rooted in the place. My response was to propose a volume with a rectangular plan from which a shell-shaped void, resembling a wind-filled sail, had been scooped out.
The form, by itself, may seem like a simple geometrical object. However, when it is suspended over a water court that has been designed to incorporate views of the sea, on a seaside site on the island of Saadiyat, the void space, defined by gentle curves, will become a device drawing the grand seascape closer to the observer.
