When I was young, I simply wanted to travel to distant places. There didn’t have to be any reason for traveling. I wanted to go to far-off places in search of things I’d never seen before.
It wasn’t simply a matter of covering a lot of distance. I was prompted by a desire to discover things no one else had known or experienced, even in their imagination. Wandering about like that is the very essence of travel. That’s why it’s best to travel alone.
I first went to Europe in 1965. I went to Vienna because of musicians such as Hayden, Mozart, Schubert and Schoenberg and artists such as Egon Schiele and Klimt. I wanted to see the city in which architects such as Otto Wagner and Josef Hoffmann lived around the time of the S ecess1on movement.
