I do not remember when I first met Tadao Ando. I did converse with him at an architectural exhibition he was holding at a gallery called Sagacho Exhibit Space in Tokyo. I asked him then what the situation was like in Osaka.
I think that exhibition was his first in Tokyo, but I am no longer certain of the facts. Yet I clearly remember talking with him at the gallery. That was the year I was to begin giving intensive lectures at Osaka University. I was going to have to spend a number of days each year in Osaka, giving lectures at the university.
Explaining my situation, I put a question to Ando that was completely beside the point as far as the exhibition was concerned. I asked the Osaka architect for suggestions on places to stay in that city. That is what I mean by my inquiring about the situation in Osaka.
