From the heartland of Japan Tadao Ando is very physical person. He is continually animated. When talking to you his hands move constantly; suddenly he will pick up a coloured pencil and start to sketch.
He is restless and compact-like a boxer in the ring he keeps moving. Ando’s eyes smile back at you; they dance around you as though sparring and then reach out and clasp you momentarily as if to weigh you up, taking you in a grip that feels almost physical it is so intensely focused. Tadao Ando has a certain closeness, he experiences things and people in a tactile way.
Some people keep their distance when they meet new people. Not so Ando － he advances toward you. He is both centred and lively and his architecture can be thought of in the same way: his buildings instantly engage you, there is no way to avoid a response, they are so strongly formed, such insistent tectonic constructions.
