The first edition of The Le Corbusier Guide dates from over fourteen years ago when, at the height of a certain phase of Post Modernism, the Renaissance and Enlightenment were held up as the proper field of inquiry by a generation of architects and educators who had known the last phases of High Modernism intimately.
Much as Walter Gropius forbade Michael Graves to study Letarouilly’s illustrative guide to the architecture of Rome (not coincidentally the first publication of Princeton Architectural Press), our teachers admonished us against the culprit responsible for failed utopias, urban decay, leaking roofs, and the absence of ritual.
The world seem divided among disciples who had received the word of the master Le Corbusier directly, those whose mission was to kill the father (while simultaneously pilfering the grave), and a first generation of the genuinely ignorant. The centennial of his birth, which was the year this guide was published, marked a kind of psychological watershed in which he passed from a presence to historical figure.
