It all started in the mid-1980’s as a fantasy project. At the time, I was designing a church near the peaks of Mount Rokko in Kobe. The project triggered my curiosity to imagine what a chapel on a completely contrary site condition - say, on the coast - would look like. This kernel of an idea eventually took shape as the Church on the Water, a chapel that coexists with the ebbing tide.

Architectural design is the building of an ideal model through constant modification while wrestling with various given conditions and constraints. However, I feel it is also important to have occasional projects where one’s own architectural ideals can be freely pursued without constrictions. Imagining the site as somewhere on the shoreline of Kobe, I continued making studies of the small chapel. Because the project was purely imaginary, I decided to make the geometry pure as possible, yet bold and powerful.

The concept was for the entire water garden of the chapel to flow down to the revetment and connect with the sea. This fantasy project continued to grow until a large model was prepared, and eventually culminated in a presentation at the architectural exhibition in the spring of 1987. To my delight, one of the visitors unexpectedly offered to erect the Church on the Water on his ongoing development in Hokkaido.
