There are times when I am attracted to something though I do not understand the reason for the attraction. My visit to the monastery of La Tourette by Le Corbusier on my first trip to the West in 1965 was just such a time.

Rough concrete rose from a slope. The courtyard was a strange landscape of cones and cylinders. Inside the building was revealed a visionary, geometrical world bathed in light and colors. Individual scenes were exciting and moving, but I was unable to come to any conclusion of my own as to what the building as a whole was saying. I visited the space repeatedly over several days but finally left La Tourette without finding an answer.

It was later, when I discovered in a biography of Corbusier a record of a conversation with Father Couturier, that I was able to arrive at an answer of my own. To the friar who played the role of patron in his two religious projects – La Tourette and Ronchamp – Corbusier spoke passionately about the Monastery of Ema near Florence which he had visited in youth.
