In the space of only three-quarters of a century a brutal rupture, unlike anything in the annals of history, has wrenched all of the social life of the West from its framework, which was relatively traditional and remarkably in harmony with geography.

The explosive, the cause of the rupture, was the sudden intrusion of speed into a life which until then had kept time to the step of horses’ hooves—speed in production, speed in the transportation of people and things. Speed appears and the big cities burst or suffocate, the rural regions are depopulated, each province is violated in its most intimate heart.

The two traditional types of human settlement (city and village) go through a terrible crisis. Our cities spread shapelessly, indefinitely. The city, coherent urban organism, disappears; the village, coherent rural organism, bears the stigmata of ever-faster decay. Abruptly thrown into contact with the big city, the village loses its balance and is deserted.
