American master architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867 -1959) had a close relationship with Japan. Even without the example of Tokyo’s former Imperial Hotel, a strong interest in Wright exists in Japan and legends surrounding him abound. This exhibition reconsiders Wright and his achievements from a contemporary perspective and provides a context to examine Wright’s influence on 20thcentury architecture.

As Wright considered the harmony between nature, building and interior design an essential element of architecture, he strove to create structures that were closely integrated with their surrounding environments and designed the interior spaces for many of the buildings himself. Over 200 works have been assembled for this exhibition, including drawings, lithographs, sketches, architectural models, furniture, art glass, lighting equipment, tableware, textiles, and graphic designs of Wright’s creation.

The original 50-square meter office designed in 1937 for Edgar J. Kaufmann has been rebuilt to allow audiences to experience firsthand the space in a Wright-conceived environment. This exhibition is arranged both chronologically and thematically, and especially focuses on the following points: Wright’s influence on European Modernism, his achievements in Japan, his influence on contemporary architecture, and his vision of the city.
