I see a sparrow sitting on a nearby branch, busily preening its feathers. Our dogs, John and Jack, lie sleeping on the bench. They look like they’re dreaming. From time to time one of their legs twitches, then goes still. Dingo is in another comer of the garden, digging a hole. Not for any particular purpose, it seems, just to dig.

Junior is standing there, a baseball in his mouth, hoping for a game of fetch. The pleasing aroma of coffee drifts over from Bird. There is a dim sound of wood being worked. It’s only been here for two years, but it feels like it’s been here much longer.

Maggie had explained what she meant by the word “nest”. We thought that was the kind of place we wanted, and have been working continuously to bring it to actuality. It feels like we have been here for ages, and that the place has been here longer. Let’s step back to where it started.
