The 1920s were optimistic years in which people looked to the future and put their trust and hopes in technological progress. While the devastation of the First World war had changed society irrevocably, it also had the effect of accelerating the transition from the Edwardian era to the Modern Age.

At the start of the decade motorcars were still sharing roadways with horse-drawn vehicles, and although there was electric street lighting, the majority of homes used gas or oil lamps.

While most households possessed a gramophone, telephones and wireless radios were still relatively uncommon, and news and public information was disseminated largely through newsreel screenings at cinemas, which were of course also very popular for the black and white films they showed.
