THIS book is intended to be a sort of ex post facto catalogue of the exhibition of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1940. It is, however, no more closely linked with the exhibition than was the book, The Architecture of H. H. Richardson and His Times, which I prepared together with the Richardson exhibition at the Museum of Modem Art in 1936, or the book and exhibition devoted to Rhode Island Architecture which I arranged for the Providence Rhode Island School of Design in 1939.
The Wright exhibition at the Museum included many superb models; photographs of several of them are used in this book. Many original renderings shown in the exhibition also appear here.
But the plan of the book is somewhat different from that of the exhibition, although the purpose is the same: to display as fully as may be the architectural work and projects of Wright, with particular emphasis on the expression of the “Nature of Materials,” the characteristic phrase Wright has selected both for the title of the exhibition and of the book.
