It was when I stood inside the Pantheon in Rome that I first became aware of the real meaning of architectural space. What I experienced was not space in the conceptual sense – it was real – before my very eyes. This famous monument consists of a cylinder-like enclosing wall topped by a hemispherical dome of equal diameter.

Both the diameter of the building and its height including the dome are 43.2 meters. In its basic form, the Pantheon is an immense spherical mass. When the inside of this simple geometrical building is illuminated from the 9-meter diameter skylight into the center of the dome, the architectural space is certainly very real.

This state created by substance and light is something that can never be experienced in an untouched natural setting. It has a splendor that would be impossible without forms built out of human inspiration, namely, architecture. The “force” of excitement I felt at that time is what I would like to call architecture.
