In 1873, Dr. Christopher Dresser wrote, “A chair is a stool with a back-rest, and a stool is a board elevated from the ground by supports.” This definition of the chair seems absurdly simplistic today, for over the last hundred years the chair has been subject to a succession of revolutionary transformations, uniquely emerging as an eloquent symbol of our highly complex society.
The enduring success of a particular chair design can be evaluated by how skilfully its creator has synthesized aesthetics and function while addressing a specific need. The relevance of an individual design may also be gauged by how well it expresses the spirit of the age in which it was created. Chairs sustain a far greater physical and psychological relationship with their users than do tables or case pieces.
For this reason, the design of chairs has to be seen as set apart from that of other furniture. Since the beginning of civilization humans have required something to sit on – and as societies evolve, so does the chair. As a symbolic object, therefore, the chair has few equals – in the form of a throne or the electric chair, it potently expresses power and authority.
