Most people probably know that Le Corbusier has been one of the leading names within twentieth century architecture, town planning and furniture design. Fewer people are perhaps acquainted with his pictorial art. The exhibition Le Corbusier – Painter and Architect at Nordjyllands Kunstmuseum provides an opportunity for making this acquaintance.
In reality, it is impossible to separate Le Corbusier’s work as an architect from his work as a painter. He often said himself, that it was through painting that he had arrived at architecture.
Painting functioned as a place for experimentation where he developed the rich, plastic language of form so characteristic of his work. Thus there was an inner coherence in everything Le Corbusier occupied himself with be it painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, tapestry or architectural projects.
