While the Millowners Building at Ahmedabad of 1954 and the Carpenter Arts Center, Harvard of 1964 are barely, in terms of their design, more than a decade apart, the development to which they belong has its antecedents in a labyrinth of creation that runs as far back as the late ‘twenties; a convoluted history that it is difficult if not impossible to unravel.

Suffice it to state, for our purposes here, that the villa projected for Carthage (fig: 7) in 1928, is, in some way, a primary motivation behind a great deal of Le Corbusier’s Indian work, which began with his first sketches for Chandigarh in 1951.

Between the Carthage Villa and the Ahmedabad building there lie a number of interim steps that demand our brief attention.
