Building is a circumstance man shares with animals, birds, the fish and the insect. But architecture —great mother-art— begins where such creature-building leaves off and man’s sovereignty —his spirit— reigns. Lower orders of life build by hereditary instinct: sea shells, bird-nests, the honeycomb of the bee, the citadel of the ant.

All such creature-building is a gift by nature. In bewildering variety we find in lives of the creatures basis of earthly building long before man’s civilization of himself began or ever could begin to appear, as architecture.

So, although architecture is building, this vast world of creature-building is not architecture. Well informed by heredity, its beauty is natural— for instance, the tortoise-shell fashioned by the awkward turtle. All creature-building is elemental and its beauty inevitable.(Iovanna Lloyd Wright)
