People from all over the world will come to see what we’re building”, said the great architect Gaudi… and time proved him right. It was the time of the Industrial Revolution, an innovation which Catalonia took advantage of in order to create an unexampled industrial network in a country, Spain, that was eminently agricultural.
Such economic prosperity gave rise to social changes that favoured sponsorships and an artistic renaissance, but it also produced a recession of religious values. A bookseller from Barcelona, Mr. Josep M Bocabella, wanted to relieve that decay, and in 1886 he founded the “Spiritual Association of Saint Joseph Devotees”.
But his fervent mind held the idea of erecting an expiatory sanctuary 一 that is, one paid for solely with donations from worshippers －dedicated to Mary, Joseph and Jesus: the Holy Family. A decade later he acquired the privileged building site where he could make his dream come true and surround it by quiet gardens which, like a cloister surrounded by trees, would contribute to spiritual retreat on the monument’s shadow.
