Isidre Puig i Boada, born on 20th April 1891, qualified as an architect on 8th May 1915 and first came in contact with Gaudi whilst still a student; together with his colleague, Lluis Bonet i Gari, he maintained that contact without interruption until the death of the master. He later worked with Gaudi’s successors, Domenec Sugranyes and Francesc Quintana, and was appointed chief architect in 1950 when work was beginning on the Passion facade, which he has been fortunate enough to see completed.
Puig i Boada is thus a real expert on Gaudi and on the building of the church, having lived with it daily for half a century. In 1929, at the same time as Rafols published the first – and affectionate – biography of Gaudi, Puig i Boada wrote El temple de la Sagrada Familia, a second, enlarged edition of which appeared in 1952 to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Gaudi, and a third in 1979. He has now produced a fourth edition of his book, again enlarged, for much has happened at the Sagrada Familia since 1979.
This fourth edition was certainly needed, since the first three are out of print and the church is clearly a subject of great interest. Puig I Boada’s output as a writer includes a considerable number of articles on the subject of Gaudi in Templo, El Mati, Miscellania Barcinonensia and other journals, as well as his detailed study L’Esglesia de la Colonia Guell (1976) published in Catalan, Spanish and English, and his masterly work El pensament de Gaudi (1981).
