The nineteenth century was a complicated period for Christianity in Europe, and Barcelona, a city that was undergoing great social and economic change during this period, was a paradigm of these difficulties.
The Church, which had wielded great influence throughout the entire history of Spain, saw its authority greatly challenged due to the action of the successive liberal governments that held power in the decades following the French Revolution and the War of Independence.
The ecclesiastical confiscations dictated in 1836, whereby the State expropriated lands and assets that the Church had accumulated over the centuries, plunged the institution into a deep economic crisis. Moreover, a section of Spanish society had to undergo a radical change in habits brought about by the Industrial Revolution and by the consequent shift from eminently rural customs to a new urban lifestyle.
