The World Heritage Committee added Le Corbusier’s architectural work to the World Heritage List at their 40th session held in Istanbul in July 2016. The National Museum of Western Art’s Main Building and forecourt were named as one of the 17 sites included in the newly designated Architectural Work of Le Corbusier, an Outstanding Contribution to the Modern Movement.

As part of his architectural design process, Le Corbusier conducted extensive research and sometimes produced prototypes of his ideas, which were then adapted as needed to the conditions and environment of actual construction sites.

The Main Building of the National Museum of Western Art, which opened in 1959, was designed by Le Corbusier on the basis of his Museum of Unlimited Growth prototype and its principle that allows for the addition of galleries to accommodate a growing collection.
